Your Immune System – What Is It And How Does It Work?

Your immune system is very complex. What is it, how does it work, and how can you keep it strong? Learn all about how to have a healthy immune system, the immune response, and how to avoid illness here.

Very simply, your immune system is your front line of defense against all invaders to keep you healthy. “Invaders” include pathogens, bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses. Collectively, these make up a group of antigens. The response to these is invaders is called the antigen response. The word comes from the generation of antibodies to fight them off.

This sophisticated system is made up of proteins, cells, organs, and tissues. These all interact in a very sophisticated network of partnership towards one goal – keeping you healthy.

To make it simpler, we will refer to all invaders as “the bad guys.” The cells and tissues that are normal and healthy, part of your “self”, are “the good guys.” At any given time, we have lots of these foreign invaders in our body. And we are constantly taking new “bad guys” in through our food, air and water. This defensive system has a tall order to fill, and a healthy immune system never takes a break.

To function properly, it must be able to decide whether or not what enters the body is a good guy or a bad guy. In a properly functioning immune system, the friends and foes are identified correctly. To make matters more complicated, pathogens or “bad guys” can adapt and change quickly, fooling or tricking this system into accepting them, and then you can become sick. So it’s war between the good guys and the bad guys!

When a pathogen enters the bloodstream, there is an immune response. The large white blood cells engulf the pathogens and eat them up. The smaller lymphocytes have to be a little more clever – they have to adapt a specific defense to them. The B Cells identify pathogens as bad guys, then the Killer-T cells kill them. Helper-T cells help out, and when the carnage is over, suppressor T-Cells turn off the immune response.

When it comes to immunity, there is a delicate balance to be maintained. If the immune system is too weak, referred to as immunodeficiency, or too strong, as in auto-immune disorders, problems can result. Immunodeficiency occurs when a person’s immune syste
1000
m is not strong enough to fight off infection. One of the best known examples of immunodeficiency is HIV.

By contrast, an overactive system is referred to as an auto immune disorder or autoimmunity. Here, the normal cells and tissues are identified as enemies, and then the killers (T-cells) and eaters (White Blood Cells) go in and destroy this healthy tissue. Some examples of autoimmune disorders are Rheumatoid Arthritis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Lou Gehrig’s Disease, and Lupus.

The immune system you are born with is called your innate immune system. The things that we do to increase our resistance to disease, is part of what is called our adaptive immune system. An example of adaptive immunity is receiving a vaccination, so that your body builds up a defense or antibodies to the vaccine. As a result, if and when you are exposed to the virus that was in the vaccine, your immune system will fight it off and you won’t get sick. In this way your immune system has memory.

The study of all aspects of this and how it relates to human health is called immunology. This is an ever growing field, and with complexities that are continually uncovered each day, we learn more about how we can protect ourselves and our health through better understanding of our immune system, both innate and adaptive.

Genes play their part, and we can do the rest. This is our front line of defense against all foreign invaders, so we can certainly strengthen our army of good guys to keep out the bad guys.

In order to do this, it is important to exercise regularly, eat well, get regular rest, maintain a healthy body weight, and supplement with what is missing. It is also important to avoid ingesting toxins wherever possible, and where it is not possible, to eliminate them as soon as they are ingested. And it goes without saying that smoking, alcohol abuse, and inappropriate drug use will do harm to this complex system as well.

Often, when our immunity is down and we get sick, we go to the doctor. At this point the approach is reactive. We are finding more and better ways now to be pro-active, and to prevent this in the first place by stopping the invaders in their tracks . This is done by building a very strong defense – a healthy immune system.

Glutathione has been shown to optimize the adaptive immune system, and so it is very important to boost glutathione levels in order to stay healthy and ward off illness. Glutathione is a balancer, so if your are immuno-deficient , you will get stronger. If you have an autoimmune disorder, glutathione will re-balance it.
It “knows” what to do, and gets busy doing it.

Our immune system is very complex, and requires very precise interaction and raw materials to do its job well. We can do our part to have a healthy immune system by eating well, resting, exercising, and optimizing our immune system by raising our glutathione levels.

So keep your immune system strong by preventing disease before it strikes. You will be happy and healthy as a result!

10 Things To Do When Looking At Your First Job
 by: Joseph Ullman

You are in the final year of your residency or fellowship. The anticipation of finishing and moving on to a “real” job (like working 80 hour weeks isn’t a real job…) is mounting. You’ve gotten through med school, internship and years of residency; so how tough can it be to find the perfect job?

A surprising number of all doctors don’t stay at their first job. Most have no idea what to look for as they cruise the job market. Here are 10 tips:

1) Find out what they want. When you speak to them, ask what type of skills, interests and procedures they want their ideal candidate to have. If they want a pediatrician with genetic counseling background and you don’t have it and don’t like it, don’t try to fake it.

2) Be honest about your needs. There are 3 things to look for in a medical job – location, practice style, money. You’ll probably only optimize 2 of the 3. Sit down and figure out what you need and want.

3) Be honest about your skills. When you apply and interview, make sure you are absolutely clear about what you can do, and what you want to do. If you are a general surgeon and absolutely hate trauma, really consider whether it is worth taking that job at a trauma center just to be in the city and in the salary range you want.

4) Look hard at the area. Not only should you take a realtor tour, but try to spend an additional day driving around the region. Look at nearby cities and recreation. Regional factors may turn a drab opportunity into an acceptable one.

5) Find out where you have to live. Never take a job without clarifying this. Certain medical staffs and accreditation agencies may require docs to be available within a certain amount of time. Don’t be surprised when you arrive.

6) Be wary of any group that offers to parallel train (train you in a procedure with an existing member of the group. They may mean well, but it just rarely happens. They’re busy, you’ll be busy; how realistic is it that someone will stop his clinical practice to stand with and proctor you for a dozen cases?

7) Look at subtle clues – growth in the city; maintenance of physical plant of the hospital. Is it clean? Freshly painted? Are shopping and dining opportunities in line with your expectations? For example, if there are closed down fast food franchises, is that a sign of a robust local economy?

8) Do some homework before you arrive. Know something about the geography of the region, local industries, other hospitals. Look at a map to see what is in the region so when you are talking with potential colleagues about recreation and housing you’ll have an idea what they are talking about. Check out http://www.city-data.com).

9) Be wary of citations, accreditations, and awards influencing your decision. Bus advertising touting America’s Best Hospitals or media ads featuring smiling nurses are created by the same type of media minds that market Swiffer dusters and Oxyclean.

10) Next tip? Wait for my next article; when I’ll include the single most important question you can ask when you are sizing up a possible job.

Cell Phone Protection against radiations:

There are now predictable to be 208 million cell phone users in the U.S. alone, 1.9 billion all over the world. Scientists panic we might be on the verge of a health calamities of epidemic proportions. Dr. George Carlo, previous chief scientist of the cellular phone industry’s $28 million safety research project, estimates 500,000 new cases of brain and eye cancer every year by 2010 attributable to cellular phone use (there are at present 30-50,000 cases every year).

Studies have linked cellular phone radiation to health problems like headaches, high blood pressure, brain tumors, cancer, Alzheimer’s, and many more. There is a latency period for most diseases and it may take many years and more studies prior to the needed weight of evidence are founded. But the effects are cumulative and safety measures ought to be taken now before it is too late.

Here are few steps you can take to diminish/lessen the effects of cellular phone radiation contact:

1. Limit use to necessary calls and keep calls short. Even a two-minute call has been found to change the innate electrical activity of the brain for up to an hour afterwards.

2. Children ought to be permitted to use the cellular phone in cases of urgent situation only. Because of their developing skulls, the radiation can penetrate much more deeply.

3. Usage of ear an air tube headset (not normal wired headset). The regular wired headset has been established to deepen radiation into the ear canal. The wire transmits not only the radiation from the cell phone but also serves as an antenna drawing EMFs (electromagnetic fields) from the environs

4. Don’t put the cellular phone in your pocket or belt at the time of its usage. The body tissue in the lower body area has fine conductivity and sucks up radiation more rapidly than the head. One study shows that men who wear cellular phones near their groin could have their sperm count plunged by as much as 30 percent.

5. In case you’re using the phone without a headset, wait for the call to connect prior to placing the phone next to the ear.

6. Do not use the cellular phone in enclosed metal spaces like vehicles or elevators, where devices might use more power to set up connection. The metal enclosure also acts as a Faraday cage that traps the radiation and reflects it back onto the inhabitants.

7. Do not make a call when the signal strength is one bar or less, which means the mobile phone, ought to work harder to set up a connection.

8. Buy a phone with a low SAR (Specific Absorption Rate). Most cellular phones have a SAR level listed in its instruction guide. The SAR level is a way of measuring the amount of radiofrequency (RF) energy that is absorbed by the body. The lesser the number the better. (Be aware, nevertheless, that studies with RF hundreds of times lower than present SAR limits still show biological consequences.

9. Use a scientifically validated EMF protection device. There are advanced technologies available nowadays that strengthen your bioenergy field and immune system against the effects of EMF. The EMF radiation causes a problem only when the cumulative effects due to frequent exposure weaken the body’s ability to mend itself. Even when you don’t use the cellular phone, ’second-hand’ radiation and EMFs from other devices may also cause biological stress, so these kinds of devices are becoming more vital.

10. Take nutritional supplements, mainly anti-oxidants SOD, catalase, glutathione, and Coq10. Microwave radiation has been shown to lessen levels of these anti-oxidants in the body. These are stuffs the body makes to protect itself, and their levels are sensitive indicators in strain, aging, infections and different other disease states. Other supplements you might require are:

- Melatonin: a powerful anti-oxidant noted to avert DNA breaks in brain cells. Also effective in averting kidney damage from cellular phones;

- Zinc: safeguards the eye from oxidative damage and helps protects the levels of anti-oxidants in the blood;

- Gingko Biloba: an herb considered an influential anti-oxidant which averts oxidative damage in the brain, eye and kidney. Also helps support the manufacture of SOD, catalase and glutathione;

- Bilberry extract: conserves vision and lessens oxidative damage to the eyes.

This list is not exhaustive but represents dissimilar layers of interference you may do right away to guard yourself and your folks. Cellular phone radiation (and wireless radiation generally) poses a tremendous public health risk that can take years to become completely recognized. Certain experts go on to say that if estimates are right, then we are on the verge of a health calamities that could cripple our present health infrastructure. Let’s not wait and find out if this proves factual.

Cell Phone Protection from virus:

Forty-nine million people can now tap into the Internet by cellular phone and that number is estimated to double in the subsequently year, but these so-called smart phones may not be very smart when it comes to viruses. As customer specialist Ric Romero found out, these cellular phones can be infected just like computers. Yes, a virus could target your cellular phone, but there are a lot more ways to protect your phone from getting infected.

Mark Copeland, a cellular phone user, lately got a new cell phone and it is loaded. His cell phone has Internet, email and it can even bond/connect wirelessly to his laptop. One more thing it can do is catch a virus.

But he ought to, particularly if he downloads documents, pictures or music.

Symantec spokesperson Sarah Hicks says, “We’re starting to see an augmented amount of these kinds of malware hit cellular phones and wireless PDA’s.”

Cell viruses are frequently disguised as free games. They are very interesting to youth and young adults, but they can harm your phone.

Hicks stated that the damage can be anything from just changing some of the settings to in fact stopping the operation of the device and stealing information. Even draining your minutes, making long distance calls at your cost.

A lot of smart phones have built-in safety that computers don’t. But smart phones are susceptible, even more so when they use Bluetooth.

Bluetooth lets people to use a wireless earpiece or to beam phone numbers amid a phone and PC.

Joe Farren with CTIA-The Wireless Association says, “Sometimes viruses can travel through the Bluetooth. So what we advise is people turn off their Bluetooth when their device is not having contact with another device.”

But most of the people don’t. When Mark Copland’s computer searched for his phone’s wireless connection, it also found another cellular phone not far away. That can be an open door for a virus.

“Subscribers ought to still take the same safety measures with their wireless phone as they do with their PC,” says Farren.

If you access e-mail on your cell, be cautious. “Don’t open attachments from populace you don’t know. Only download content from trusted basis,” says Hicks.

A lot of anti-virus companies are now providing software to protect wireless devices.

By the way, if you are a Blackberry user, you will be satisfied to know they are hard to infect. While they can read e-mail, they can’t download programs and that is how most viruses get into cells.

Glutathione – How Does It Boost My Immune System?

Did you know that glutathione has an effect on your immune system? This means that the amount of glutathione you have in your cells has a direct bearing on whether or not you catch a virus and get sick or not. How would you like to get sick less often than you do now? Who wouldn’t, you say?

Our human immune system is very complex, and goes beyond the scope of this page. However, there is new research coming out that demonstrates for a fact that glutathione is one of the most powerful supplements to boost your immune system. I am happy to share that research with you. It is important to understand the difference between our innate immune system, which we are born with, and our adaptive immune system, which in turn involves acquired immunity, which prepares your body to deal with future challenges.

In published medical studies, glutathione has been shown to boost the adaptive immune system, and so it is very important to boost glutathione levels in order to stay healthy and ward off illness. Glutathione is a balancer, so if your are immunodeficient, your immune system will get stronger. Glutathione boosts white blood cell production, particularly T-cells, which are responsible for fighting infections as you are exposed to them. If you have an auto-immune disorder, glutathione will re-balance your immune system. It “knows” what to do, and gets busy doing it.

The system that protects our immunity is very complex, and requires very precise interaction and raw materials to do it’s job well. We can do our part to keep ours strong by eating well, resting, exercising, and boosting our immunity by raising and sustaining our glutathione levels.

There are a number of studies done using a special glutathione enhancer named Immunocal, which you will learn more about in the last article in this series. But for now, you can click on the link at the bottom of the article to view this information for yourself. There you can see some of the published studies that have been done using this supplement and its effect on the human immune system.

Note what some recognized medical professionals are now saying about glutathione and it’s effect on the immune system based on this published research:

Dr. James Balch:

• Graduated wi
1000
th honors from the University of Indiana School of Medicine.

• Spent over 30 years as a urologist in private practice before devoting his career to nutritional healing.

• Member of the American Medical Association, the American College of Surgeons, and board certified by the American Board of Urology.

• Is recognized as a prominent authority on nutrient healing.

• Is author of several books including the best seller, Prescription for Nutritional Healing.

“It’s my opinion that everyone should be taking Immunocal. Today, there’s no better way to boost your immune system. “

Dr. Wulf Droge:

• A world renowned research scientist and Senior Vice-President, Research & Development, Immunotec Inc.

• Has over 250 publications and is internationally known in the field of redox physiology and aging research.

• Has over 40 years of active experience in basic and clinical research.

• For almost 30 years he served as professor of immunology and cell biology at the University of Heidelberg and head of the Department of Immunochemistry at the National Cancer Research Center of Germany.

• Was the first to describe the effect of glutathione on the immune response.

“Many studies of my laboratory at the German Cancer Research Center support the conclusion that Immunocal is effective in maintaining a strong immune system . . . Through its special structural properties, Immunocal overcomes a cellular deficiency that is most commonly seen in old age … This deficiency affects most notably the cells of the immune system and is associated with an increased incidence of infections. Elderly people are therefore the first to feel the benefits if regularly consuming Immunocal . . . young people are well advised to also consume Immunocal regularly. It is good advice to be prepared at all times.”

Dr. Jimmy Gutman, MD, FACEP:,

• Author of several best selling books on glutathione.

• Former professor at McGill University Medical school

• Original specialty was emergency medicine

• Currently practices family medicine and appears on numerous TV and radio shows discussing the role of glutathione in health and disease.

Note his comments taken from his latest bestseller,”Glutathione – Your Key to Health”:

“The immune system uses various cells to fight off infection and other threats and the healthy growth and activity of these cells depends upon the availability of glutathione (GSH)…Glutathione is at the heart of all immune functions and low GSH levels are seen in many diseases, especially AIDS which is characterized by a severely compromised immune system. Raising and maintaining GSH levels can minimize the risk of these diseases…Without question, the best type of preventive medicine is an optimized immune system and a critical strategy to optimize it is by feeding it GSH.”

These immune system research studies and resulting comments by medical professionals have formed the basis for Immunocal to make the claim that it is the only dietary supplement scientifically proven to consistently raise glutathione levels and thereby enhance the human immune system. Immunocal works by giving your body the building blocks you need to make it in your cells, which you will learn more about in Article 6 of this series. You can’t just take a glutathione pill!

Glutathione – How Does It Help With Detoxification?

Many are concerned about the toxic chemicals surrounding us in our environment today. How does glutathione help us with detoxification? Find out here!

Detoxification or detox is defined as the removal of toxins from the body. Toxins are considered to be poisonous substances. They may be classified as either organic or inorganic. Knowing these dangerous chemicals, and that they are capable of causing harm to you, either by contact with them or by absorbing them through your food, air, or water, or other means, is very important to your health.

Why should you be concerned about removing toxins from your body? Our food, air and water just 75-100 years ago was relatively safe. But in just one generation, the situation has changed dramatically. Knowing what are toxins in our food, environment, and home is important, and knowing how to protect ourselves is crucial.

You need a dual strategy to successfully deal with toxins. You need to prevent them from coming in and you also need to remove the ones that do make it in. You can avoid those that you know about, but some toxins make it in to our system every day. Glutathione is here to make sure you have the best defense – as a detoxifier of toxins you may ingest throughout the course of your day.

We have tens of thousands of toxins in our environment today, poisons that were not known just a hundred years ago. Our body has a large order to fill – to successfully help us to remove them as they come in. And with disease on the increase, it is becoming increasingly evident that our bodies need an extra boost to keep up!

Just how does glutathione work in its role of detoxification? Glutathione was first discovered in 1888 by De-Rey-Pailhade, but much was yet to be learned once it was found. It wasn’t until about 30 years ago that glutatione’s main role as a detoxifier was discovered. Now that there is growing evidence regarding the role of toxins and disease, and the powerful role that prevention plays, we have access to research that shows us just how glutathione keeps us from becoming full of poisons and toxic substances.

Your liver and kidneys are your main organs of detoxification, and therefore they contain the highest amounts of glutathione. If you didn’t have
1000
glutathione in your body right now, you would not be able to read this sentence because you would be dead from all of the poisons in your body. Really! And it’s not just humans that have this powerful protein at their disposal. Glutathione plays an important life-sustaining role in all vertebrates, and even in insects, plants and microorganisms!

Regarding glutathione’s role in removing toxins, a team of biochemists comprised of D.P. Jones, L.A Brown, and P. Sternberg from Emory School of Medicine in Atlanta wrote, “GSH has multiple functions in detoxification and its depletion has been associated with an increased risk of chemical toxicity….GSH can be depleted by different agents (and GSH) plasma levels vary with gender, age, race, and dietary habits.”
-Toxicology 105:267-274, 1995

They suggest as a result of their findings that we can measure the risk that environmental toxins pose to an individual by monitoring their glutathione levels. H. Lew and A. Quitanihila, physiologists at the University of California, saw that the increase in glutathione levels of physically fit individuals make them better equipped to handle toxic threats. – Eur. J. Drug Metab. Pharmacokinet. 16: 59-68, 1991

Along with R.J. Flanagan and T.J. Meredith at the Poisons Unit of Guy’s Hospital in London, they found that glutathione, in addition to being used for acetaminophen overdose, a frequent occurrence in England, that research will also show its potential to detoxify carbon monoxide, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, and other harmful compounds – American J. Med. 91 (3C): 131S-139S, 1991

Acetaminophen has long been known to reduce protective levels of glutathione. You might be surprised to find out what many do every day that depletes their protective gluathione levels! The way glutathione works is as a chelating agent. If you are familiar with chelation therapy, substances are introduced into your system, so they can bind to the toxins and remove them from the body.

Glutathione does much the same thing. It binds to the toxins in your system with an enzyme called conjugase, and this process is called direct conjugation. This process is also described very well in the Physician’s Desk Reference listing for Immunocal, a clinically proven glutathione enhancer.

In this listing, it is explained that “Through direct conjugation, (glutathione) detoxifies many xenobiotics (foreign compounds) and carcinogens, both organic and inorganic…Glutathione augmentation is a strategy developed to address states of glutathione deficiency, high oxidative stress, immune deficiency, and xenobiotic overload in which glutathione plays a part in the detoxification of the xenobiotic in question.”

Chelation therapy works well, but it is invasive and needs to be performed by a medical professional. You can raise your glutathione levels in the comfort of your own home by taking in the building blocks every day as a drink or food. Once the glutathione binds to these toxins, they are neutralized and liquefied, and they can exit the body as harmless waste. Some of the common ways the toxins will exit the body are through the bowels, urine, and sweat.

Glutathione detoxifies a large number of pollutants, carcinogens, heavy metals, herbicides, pesticides, and radiation. Mercury poisoning is a concern to many people today, and glutathione successfully removes mercury from the body as well. We are continually exposed to these toxins every day through cigarette smoke, automobile exhaust, food preservatives, and dental amalgams to name a few.

We depend on glutathione to safely remove them. And glutathione enhancing substances are being used with increasing frequency in the field of toxicology, and they are having much success! So now you understand glutathione’s role as a detoxifier. Watch for our next edition of Glutathione Report that will answer the question: “How does glutathione give me energy on a cellular level, and how is it anti aging?”

How do pure mineral cosmetics revitalize and maintain healthy skin?

There are excellent properties in mineral based cosmetics that promote healthy skin recognized by dermatologists. Dermatologists typically recommend high quality mineral based cosmetics that are free of irritating dyes, oils, perfumes, preservatives or chemicals, and free of nano-sized particles. Usually, they will prefer the use of natural inorganic minerals that sooth and heal the skin, natural pigments, and cosmetics that are loaded with super-antioxidants. Many women claim tremendous improvement in the quality of their skin within a short period of time after switching to a high quality mineral makeup product. Be sure to check the ingredients when purchasing mineral based cosmetics to avoid brands with inferior ingredients.

Do mineral based cosmetics heal the skin?

Pure mineral cosmetics use revitalizing minerals with properties that are excellent for acne, rosecea, and irritated skin. Acne and rosecea benefit from zinc oxide as it promotes healing to the skin and is a natural anti-inflammatory. Titanium dioxide and zinc hold in natural moisture, keeping the skin healthy and hydrated, and they allow the skin to breathe without clogging the pores. Antioxidants such as grape seed extract or pomegranate extract neutralize free radicals that cause damage to the skin and aging.

Are pores able to breathe?

Finely crushed pure mineral makeup allows the skin to breathe. Pores do not become clogged from using lightweight minerals and non-organic pigments. Whereas, heavier makeup can be absorbed into pores which can cause irritation, acne, and infection. With pure mineral makeup, sensitive skin conditions as acne, rosecea, and dry skin are soothed and not irritated.

More on anti-aging benefits

High quality pure mineral cosmetics are loaded with anti-oxidants such as grape seed extract that have anti-aging properties. Grape seed extract interrupts enzyme reactions that break down skin firming collagen. The mineral super oxide dismutase (SOD) has the property of neutralizing free radicals that age skin. In addition, vitamin A provides natural retention of moisture in skin.

Do mineral based cosmetics provide UVA-UVB protection?

Pure mineral based cosmetics use titanium dioxide as a natural sunscreen. Titanium dioxide acts as UVA-UVB protection reflecting light and protecting your skin in sunlight. Zinc is a natural anti-inflammatory. High quality mineral based cosmetics will stay on your skin when sweating or moderate swimming. So they have both SPF (sun protection) properties and water proofing properties. Most mineral based cosmetics have about SPF 15 on average.

What is the big deal about Nano sized particles?

Make-up that contains nano-sized particles are questionable as these particles are more easily absorbed into the body. Nano particles are useful in the cosmetic industry. For example, nano sized particles can encapsulate vitamin A and deliver it deeper into the skin. Nano sized ingredients are 10 to 1,000 times smaller than normally sized powder particles. Nano technology used in products are an important area of research and their impact on health and safety need to be further understood. There are conflicting opinions and research articles that have been published about using nano particles on the skin. Some state it is not a concern and others state it is something to worry about as nano-sized particles can be found in deeper tissues soon after skin contact. Another body of research points to inhalation of nano particles as a potential problem as well. Avoiding products with ingredients that have nano-sized particles is definitely a safer direction to take and be sure to look for products that ensure they do not use nano-particles.

What about fragrance in cosmetics?

Fragrances are the most common cause of irritation to the skin. Fragrances can be completely natural. However, most fragrances contain chemicals as phthalates that are used to make the scent last longer. Phthalates are unnatural and unhealthy. It is known that sometimes artificial chemical fragrances can accumulate in the body and breast milk. Fragrance formulas can trigger asthma and headaches. Be cautious when you look for an unscented product. Even though it is labeled unscented, an additional chemical may be used to cover up the original fragrance! So check the ingredients and become informed about your cosmetic products. You will find that pure mineral based cosmetics do not use fragrances.

Why aren’t preservatives used in pure mineral based cosmetics?

Cosmetics made from pure minerals and inorganic pigments that exist in nature do not need preservatives. Bacterial and fungal growth do not occur in completely dry pure mineral based cosmetics. Therefore, pure mineral cosmetics can be used for long term, up to two years. Preservatives are used in cosmetics that are not completely dry. These are subject to bacterial and fungal growth. Unfortunately, preservatives can cause irritation, acne, and infection to the skin. Preservatives are one of the main ingredients in most fragrances.

Are pure mineral based cosmetics good for the environment?

When friendly non-toxic ingredients are used in manufacturing products, the water systems are not contaminated as you wash the cosmetics off. Mineral based cosmetics are non-toxic and not based on non renewable resources as petroleum.

How do I find mineral based cosmetics that offer these qualities?

Many inexpensive cosmetics use an inferior grade of ingredients so be careful with checking what you are buying and putting on your largest organ, your skin. High quality pure mineral makeup will tend to use highest quality ingredients such as pharmaceutical grade minerals, certified organic antioxidants, and nano-free particles. Higher quality mineral cosmetics tend to last longer, and are a much much better value in the long run considering the value of your health. Look on the web for pure mineral makeup companies that ensure they are non-toxic, nano-free, and preservative-free. Always check product ingredients on the Mineral Foundation Ingredient List or the Environmental Working Groups Skin Deep Report.
